History of the French war machine
Gallic Wars: Lost. In a war whose ending foreshadows the next 2000 years of French history, France is conquered by of all things, an Italian.
Hundred Years War: Mostly lost, saved at last by a female schizophrenic who inadvertently creates The First Rule of French Warfare - "France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman."
Italian Wars: Lost. France becomes the first and only country ever to lose two wars when fighting Italians.
Wars of Religion: France goes 0-5-4 against the Huguenots.
Thirty Years' War: France is technically not a participant, but manages to get invaded anyway. Claims a tie on the basis that eventually the other participants started ignoring her.
War of Devolution: Tied. Frenchmen take to wearing red flowerpots as chapeaux.
The Dutch War: Tied.
War of the Augsburg League/King William's War/French and Indian War: Lost, but claimed as a tie. This period is inexplicably referred to as the height of French military power, at least they won the French revolution.
War of the Spanish Succession: Lost. The War also gave the French their first taste of a Marlborough, which they have loved ever since.
American Revolution: In a move that will become quite familiar to future Americans, France claims a win even though the English colonists saw far more action. This is later known as "de Gaulle Syndrome", and leads to the Second Rule of French Warfare: "France only wins when America does most of the fighting".
French Revolution: Won, primarily due to the fact that the opponent was also French. Then they celebrated by cutting off the heads of basically anyone who displeased them.
The Napoleonic Wars: Lost. Temporary victories (remember the First Rule!) due to leadership of a Corsican, who ended up being no match for a British footwear designer.
Mexican Conquest: Lost. In 1862, while America was occupied with its civil war, French and British troops invaded Mexico. France, owed a substantial amount of money, was playing the role of bully bill collector. Britain, reminded by the U.S. that this was not a good idea, withdrew its troops. In the battle of Puebla, the French, who outnumbered the Mexican forces 3 to 1, had their asses kicked all the way to the ocean. That's the reason for the cinco de Mayo holiday. The French returned with 19,000 troops and stayed another 5 years while begging for American support. Abraham Lincoln backed the Mexicans and the French again practiced their most valuable battlefield tactic, retreat, which they performed brilliantly. France has never forgiven us for that and Mexico never remembers it.
The Franco-Prussian War: Lost. Germany plays the role of drunk frat boy to France's ugly girl home alone on a Saturday night.
WWI: Tied and on the way to losing. France is saved by the United States. Thousands of French women find out what it's like to not only to sleep with a winner, but one who doesn't call her "Fraulein." Sadly, widespread use of condoms by American forces forestalls any improvement in the French bloodline.
WWII: Lost. The conquered French are liberated by the United States and Britain just as they finish learning the Horst Wessel Song.
War in Indochina: Lost. French forces get a bad case of the Dien Bien Flu and leave the mess to the Americans. Our military had beaten the communists but lost the American support needed to finish the fight (thanks John Kerry & Jane Fonda). The communists promptly killed a few million people. You've got to see the photo of a French officer, dressed in white and sitting in a chair, being carried across a stream by a group of unfortunate Vietnamese, sort of summed up their inflated view of themselves, even today.
Algerian Rebellion: Lost. This humiliation marks the first defeat of a Western army by a Non-Turkic Muslim force since the Crusades, and produces the First Rule of Muslim Warfare -"We can always beat the French." This rule is identical to the First Rules of the Italians, Russians, Germans, English, Dutch, Spanish, Vietnamese, and Eskimos.
Hutu-Tutsi Massacre: Complicit in genocide. 800,000 innocents died, many by French arms with some supplied while the massacre was in process. Kofi Annan was too busy to bother as he was quite occupied with 'managing' the U.N.'s cut of the money from the Iraq food-for-oil program and lobbying for that Nobel prize which he didn't deserve.
War on Terrorism: France, keeping in mind its recent history, surrenders to Germans and Muslims just to be safe.
Ivory Coast Mediation: Humiliation, 2003. French attempts at military greatness wouldn't be complete without mentioning this recent debacle. Called in to negotiate with rebel forces threatening the Ivorian government, the French delegation promptly announced that they have surrendered the posts of Prime Minister and Defense Minister to these bloody rebels (actually criminals). They proudly proclaimed their 'breakthrough' to an admiring French audience. The Ivorian government immediately expelled them. Update: November 2004. French forces are bombed by one of the 3 Ivorian Air Force planes (12 dead). France sends in more troops as their nationals are being systematically hunted down, raped, and deprived of their property.
European Union: The jury is still out on this one. As the self-proclaimed beacon of light and only culture worthy of defining the new Europe (to counter U.S. influence), France writes the new European Union Constitution. There's now 20 official languages in the European Union, into which every uttered word will need cross- translating, they'll be as effective as the U.N. (inept, incapable of any timely decisions or action and hopelessly corrupt). Based upon the history of such unwieldy organizations, I'm going to boldly predict (May, 2004) that this will end in chaos and failure (France will claim a tie). Anyone want to place a bet on this? I'll give odds.
Update:
EUROPEAN UNION COULD 'SPLIT' OVER CONSTITUTION. Thu
Sep 23 2004 21:52:02 ET.
THE EUROPEAN Union could be destroyed by divisions over plans for a new
constitution, the world's most influential business journal declared today.
In a warning to Europe's leaders, The Economist said it was 'probable' the EU
would split into rival camps if one or more countries votes against the
constitution. But it argued that such a collapse would actually be a good
thing with Britain and other countries able to choose how much - or how little -
they wanted to be involved. 'These referendums could throw the EU into the
sort of crisis that puts the integration process into reverse or even causes the
EU to split,' warned the magazine. 'The EU may indeed split. But a split
need not be a disaster. It could lead to a multi-layered EU in which
different countries adopt different levels of political integration and
experiment with different economic models.'
However, the magazine added that there was also the potential for a 'darker'
outcome. 'A split could cause Europe once again to divide into rival power
blocks. 'That could threaten what most agree is the Union's central achievement
- peace in Europe.' It argues the European Union have been gravely damaged
by three core problems - economically it is falling far behind the U.S. and
Asia, politically it is deeply divided on issues like Iraq, the new EU
constitution and the euro and its legitimacy has been shattered by a crippling
'lack of popular understanding and enthusiasm'.
These problems have left the EU highly vulnerable at a time when it has just
taken in 10 new members, including eight relatively impoverished countries from
Eastern Europe, fuelling fears about immigration and cheap labor. And The
Economist identifies the controversial new constitution as the straw that could
break the camel's back. A total of 11 countries - including Britain - have
now pledged to give the people a vote on the constitution.
'Europe's share of the world economy is shrinking as the United States
constantly outstrips European growth and the Asian economies surge ahead,' it
warned.

Personally, I don't have any problem with #6, above, but it's still a sore point among many Iraqi's, most likely as it was left to the Israeli's to do the dirty work, which they did! We all still owe them a 'well done' and I hope and pray that they do something similar to Iran's ridiculously transparent nuclear ambitions.
European Union Update
Forecast Calls
for US Dominance, European Disintegration
By Susan Jones. CNSNews.com Morning
Editor. February 14, 2005
(CNSNews.com) - Stratfor, a private intelligence and security consulting
organization, has released a 10-year geopolitical forecast predicting the
decline of China and Russia, the rise of Japan, the disintegration of the
European Union and the continued dominance of the United States. Stratfor
said its forecast, released Monday, is based on its ongoing analysis of
security, political, demographic, and other major trends in all key regions of
the world. The forecast is intended to help its clients (including
corporations, governments, and financial institutions) form long-range strategic
plan by "identifying potential risks and opportunities." According to the
2005-2015 forecast, the United States will continue to dominate the next decade
both economically and militarily; and the U.S. is "positioned to replicate the
investment boom of the 1995- 2005 decade." The forecast also says the U.S.
gradually will shift its strategic focus from the Middle East to the Pacific
basin. Stratfor predict the U.S. will triumph over the "jihadist" insurgents;
and it predicts "major leadership transitions" in Egypt, Syria and Saudi Arabia.
The forecast also says Europe's political union will
collapse but its economic union will endure. Tensions will increase over
Muslim immigration to European nations, the analysis said. And it said Russian
attempts to expand could present new problems.
Russia is collapsing and will become
increasingly nationalist and anti-Western, Stratfor said in a "highlights" press
release. China's economic growth will slow down, the analysis predicted,
leading to a "flight of investment." Moreover, China will experience "social
upheavals" because of the gulf between rich and poor. Japan will succeed
China as the principal Asian power, and Taiwan will align itself with Japan, the
forecast said.
Stratfor, based in Austin, Texas, said it draws on a global network of
intelligence sources in formulated its global analyses
